Dr Peter Cole

Medical qualifications: MBBS, DA, FRCA, MMedSc, FFPMRCA

After well over 30 years as a doctor and more than 20 years as a Consultant Dr Cole has gained extensive experience in managing patients with a wide range of chronic pain conditions.

His areas of special interest are in the management of low back and leg pain, the management of neuropathic (nerve pain) which includes conditions such as CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome), post surgical pain, postherpetic neuralgia (shingles) and phantom limb pain.  

 Career Summary:

1991. Medical degree, The London Hospital Medical College.

1991- 1996.  Junior doctor in London, Brisbane and Cambridge,  Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA 1994).

1996 - 2000. Specialist Registrar in Leeds, Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA 1997), Masters degree in medical science (MMedSc Leeds University 1999).

2000. Association of Anaesthetists travel grant to Copenhagen as a visiting pain fellow. Completed  specialist training, GMC specialist register.

2000- 2007.  Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine and clinical lead for the acute pain service at the Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Leeds. 

2007- present. Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at the Oxford University Hospitals Trust and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Oxford. For four years until November 2013 he was Clinical Lead for the Oxford Pain Relief Unit.

Training and Teaching:

2014- 20. Royal College of Anaesthetists' Regional Advisor in Pain Medicine for the Oxford region with the aim of raising the profile and further developing pain training. Member of Pain Faculty's Training and Assessment Committee and Royal College Workforce Lead for Pain.

2008- present. Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, Oxford University. 

2017- 19. Chair of Regional Advisors for the UK. Faculty of Pain Medicine Board member.

Current posts: Regional Advisor Oxford, Deputy Chair Training and Assessment Committee Member, Faculty of Pain Representative for the RCoA Ethics Committee

Research:

Dr Cole's MSc dissertation was based on research into efficacy and respiratory effects of systemic and spinal opioids.

2014-2023 present. Editorial board member  for the Cochrane Pain and Palliative Support Group (PAPAS). This work involves reviewing reserch proposals and completed papers. He has been a co-author on several systemic reviews on antineuropathic (antidepressant and antiepileptic) drugs for pain conditions.

Personal interests:

Family (2 daughters at Rye St Antony School), Golf (single figure handicap since 1981, rarely find time to play now!), gym, keeping fit (Blenheim Traithlon 2016/17/18/19/21/23) and flying (huge passion since my first Solo in 1992)
